Gvidget - The first GIS enabled flash video player
Ever wanted to connect your video file with GPS position data? now its possible
This is a first Prototype DEMO Version! Im currently working on a flash component which will include many more features and options. All you need for Gvidget to work is a videocam, a gps logger and a digital watch (if your videocam does not have a build in digital timer). For my first test i used the Archos 504 Player with the optional headcam. There are way better action cams on the market but actually any cam, even a build-in mobile phone cam will do. Since i dont know of any cam which is able to write GPS coordinates i used an external GPS Logger. The one i used (RoyalTek RGM 3800) has the options to change the logging interval from 1 - 60 seconds, which gives plenty of options to play with. The RoyalTek writes NMEA files which are a standard logging format for GPS coordinates. And finally i used a digital watch which i synchronized to UTC Time in order to set the start time and syncronize the two devices. Its actually very simple and quick done. Here is all you need:
The quality of the GPS tracking depends on some factors and some devices may work better then others. Overall i found the results very promising and i will make some test with other trackers as well. Since this is only a prototype i cant supply any code/swf or whatever - this is just a DEMO for now. An actual distributable Gvidget will have many more features like:
Gvidgets upcoming Features:
- Easy customizing with XML settings
- Different GPS logging Formats supported (.nmea, .gpx, .loc, .kml)
- Support for custom markers bound to GPS coordinates (Text, Video, Images, SWFs) configured in XML Settings.
- Multiple tracks and track selectors
- Export of track files in common gis formats
- Video 2x/4x playback and looping cue points
- Compass emulation
- advanced statistics
- and, and, ... many other things i can think of (Dual/Quad Screen Modus for Sport Evens just one of the many ideas)
The development of an official release will take some time and if you have any questions or comments you can mail me under: post@gvidget.com
